住飯店和坐車 (安全第一)

住飯店和坐車

前一陣子去上國際禮儀的課程，在其中一堂「觀光禮儀」課程中，老師特別告訴我們一些在旅遊中要注意的事項，讓我獲益許多，也一直很想找機會分享給各位。

(一) 到達下塌的飯店時，要注意不要把行李牌上的姓名那一面露出來，因為有許多不肖分子就是利用行李牌上的姓名來獲取「下手對象」的相關資料的。

(二) 有經驗的導遊應該都是在遊覽車上分配房間號碼，而不是在到達飯店後或是在有其他團員之外的公開場合分配，因為導遊大聲唱名分配房間號碼時，旁邊別有居心的壞人可能正好趁機記下姓名、房號等資料，然後便可輕輕鬆鬆地進入「下手對象」的房間。

(三) 一起同行的朋友，不要在飯店大廳等公開場合，大聲地連名帶姓問對方：「張三，你幾號房？」
「我214 啦！啊老李，你呢？」「我哦，我316 啊 ...」，一來一往之間，一旁伺機而動的壞人早已輕鬆獲知大家的姓名及房號，不論要色或財都是輕而易舉的事。

(四) 以上注意事項不限於本國，亦適用於語言不通的國外，原因在於每個國家的觀光飯店都有固定做某幾個國家的生意，也就是台灣團的可能都固定住哪幾家飯店，美國團的可能又是固定住哪幾家飯店，因此同一個飯店內住宿的可能大部份都是來自同一個國家的人，所以即使你用本國語大聲互喊房間號碼，可能除了同團的人之外，飯店內其他的人都聽得懂。

(五) 一般搭車，禮貌上，應該要請女士先入座，但若碰上搭計程車的時候，還是應由男士先入座較妥，因為女生比較值錢 ( 這是老師說的 ) ，有時候女生一進入車內，司機就馬上把車開走了。

以上是我上觀光旅遊的課時所記得的部份，參考，希望各位出遊時都能高高興興地出門，平平安安地回家。

這是關於飯店安全的文章。

我去旅行時都會用客房服務點早餐。

最近我住進一家知名飯店我也點用了客房服務，然後把寫了我的order的紙條放在門外。這張紙條上會寫住在房間裡面的人的名字點用幾人份的餐點房間號碼和需要送達的時間等等。

我把這紙條放在門外讓收集的人來收而這完全是個錯誤 !!!

我就這樣讓『有需要的人』輕易得到他所有需要的資訊。這個心懷不軌的人拿到了我的名字和房間號碼然後去跟櫃檯說他是我老公 ( 紙條上會寫『一個』『女生』的名字 )而他需要一把新鑰匙。

結果那個櫃檯人員連問他的身分證號碼或是打電話跟我確認都沒有就給了他我房間的鑰匙 !!!

凌晨兩點，我被開門的聲音驚醒。很幸運的，我除了鎖門外還有把門鏈掛上 ( 讓門鎖即使可以開也只能開一條縫的鍊子) ，而我看見一隻男人的手在嚐試著把那個門鏈拿下來。

我開始大叫，告訴那個人我正在通知警察。那個人關上門離開了。我打電話去給大廳的櫃檯，告訴他們這事想要通知安全部門注意這個意外，隔天早上，我告訴那個驚訝的眼睛要掉出來的飯店經理，他的手下就這樣輕易的把我的房間鑰匙給了一個連身分都沒有先經過確認的陌生人。

要是那一晚我沒有把門鏈掛上的後果...

Hydropolis Underwater Hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Currently under construction in Dubai, Hydropolis will be the world's first luxury underwater hotel. It will include three elements: the land station, where guests will be welcomed, the connecting tunnel, which will transport people by train to the main area of the hotel, and the 220 suites within the submarine leisure complex. It is one of the largest contemporary construction projects in the world, covering an area of 260 hectares, about the size of London's Hyde Park.

"Hydropolis is not a project; it's a passion," enthuses Joachim Hauser, the developer and designer of the hotel. His futuristic vision is about to take shape 20m below the surface of the Persian Gulf, just off the Jumeirah Beach coastline in Dubai.

The £300m, 220-suite hotel was due to open by the end of 2006 but has experienced delays and is now scheduled to open in 2009. It will incorporate a host of innovations that will take it far beyond the original blueprint for an underwater complex worthy of Jules Verne.

There are only a few locations in the world where such a grandiose dream could be realised. A high proportion of today's architectural marvels are materialising like fanciful mirages from the desert sands. We have come to expect extravagant enterprises to be mounted in the Middle East, and especially in Dubai. "This venture could only be born here in Dubai," says Hauser. "It has a very open-minded, international community - and that's what makes it so special."

The land on which Hydropolis is being built belongs to His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. It was his last free beach property on this stretch of coast. The project is a fantastic one, yet Sheikh Mohammed's success record with comparable schemes instills confidence that science fiction can become fact. With his support, several companies have been formed to kick-start this phenomenal project, and around 150 firms are currently involved.

"There have been many visions of colonising the sea – Jules Verne, Jean Gusto and several Japanese architects – but no one has ever managed to realise this dream," says Hauser. "That was the most challenging factor, and that's what makes it so fascinating. Despite being a dream of mankind for centuries, nobody has ever been able to make living underwater possible.

Underwater Hotel Design

The original idea for Hydropolis developed out of Hauser's passion for water and the sea, and goes much deeper than just building a hotel underwater. More than just curiosity, it is a commitment to a more far-reaching philosophy. "Once you start digging deeper and deeper into the subject, you can't help being fascinated and you start caring about all the associated issues," he explains. "Humans consist of 80% water, the earth consists of 80% water; without water there is no life."

Hydropolis reproduces the human organism in an architectural design. There is a direct analogy between the physiology of man and the architecture. The geometrical element is a figure eight lying on its side and inscribed in a circle. The spaces created in the basin will contain function areas, such as restaurants, bars, meeting rooms and theme suites. These can be compared to the components of the human organism: the motor functions and the nervous and cardiovascular systems, with the central sinus knot representing the pulse of all life.

The ballroom, located at this nerve centre, will have asymmetrical pathways connecting the different storeys along ramps. A large, petal-like retracting roof will enable the staging of open-sky events. Staircases, lifts and ramps will provide access to the ballroom, while flanking catering areas will supply banquets and receptions.

Hydropolis Land Station

In order to enter this surreal space, visitors will begin at the land station. This 120m woven, semicircular cylinder will arch over a multi-storey building. On the lowest level passengers board a noiseless train propelled by fully automated cable along a modular, self-supporting steel guide way to Hydropolis. A just-in-time and on-demand logistical system will facilitate efficient supply of goods to the hotel.

The upper storeys of the land station house a variety of facilities, including a cosmetic surgery clinic, a marine biological research laboratory and conference facilities. On the lower levels are the staff rooms, goods storage and loading areas, and hotel and parking areas.

The land station also includes a restaurant and high-tech cinema screening the evolution of life in the ocean and the history of underwater architecture. As a finale, the screen will open to reveal the real-life Hydropolis. A viewing platform at the front opening of the spanning roof will allow views of the architecture as well as the light shows of Hydropolis.

Marine Architecture

This structure promises to be a conceptual as well as a physical landmark. While human beings accept the existence of water, we have only a superficial appreciation of its significance. "We waste it, go swimming in it and generally take it for granted," says Hauser. "Humans could actually live self-sufficiently underwater, generating energy, nurturing food supplies and so on. This is why we are starting a foundation to demonstrate something of the importance of water in our lives.

"My general plan was to create a living space in the sea. My initial proposal was a deep-sea project, which looked very different. I had to adjust to the local reality of the natural surroundings and change to a shallow-water construction.

"We want to create the first ever faculty for marine architecture because I believe that the future lies in the sea, including the future of city planning. I am certain that one day a whole city will be built in the sea. Our aim is to lay the first mosaic by colonising the sea."

Hauser plans to incorporate many different elements associated with the sea. The cosmetics will be ocean-based, the cinemas will screen films that focus on aquatic themes and a children's seaworld will educate as well as entertain.

He views his creation as a place where those who do not dive – or do not even swim – can experience the tranquillity and inspiration of the underwater world. "We are expecting around 3,000 visitors a day in addition to the hotel guests. The aim is to inspire people to develop a new awareness of the sea."

As well as emphasising the positive aspects of water, Hauser also believes we are systematically destroying marine life, and thus wishes to draw attention to various dangers and problems, such as the loss of algae and the destruction of the coral reefs.

Funding and Development

Dreams, however fabulous, remain unfulfilled without the cash to support the commitment. "The hardest part of the process was finding sponsorship to the tune of €550m," admits Hauser. "That's what brought me to Dubai. Still, it was a battle which took two-and-a-half years and proved tougher than developing the project itself. No bank would pay such an amount. It's a risky investment, as there are no pilots. We had to convince investors that it is safe and will bring returns on investment."

With official blessing, the Dubai Development & Investment Authority (DDIA) established a framework to handle grants and authorisations. Once the financial backing was guaranteed, the sonar analysis of the seabed complete and 7,000 anchors in place, construction began in summer 2005.

"We are sure that this hotel will set a precedent," says Hauser. "Crescent-Hydropolis is now planning a chain of underwater hotels, and nine countries have shown interest. Some will be the realisation of my initial deep-sea design." Hauser has even chosen to make his permanent home in Dubai. "And that won't change after the project, regardless of where our next project will be. The infrastructure is exceptionally good here - and it seldom rains!"

A team of organized criminals are installing equipment on legitimate bank ATM's in at least 2 regions to steal both the ATM card number and the PIN. The team sits nearby in a car receiving the information transmitted wirelessly over weekends and evenings from equipment they install on the front of the ATM (see photos). If you see an attachment like this, do not use the ATM and report it immediately to the bank using the phone on the front of the ATM.

The equipment used to capture your ATM card number and PIN are cleverly disguised to look like normal ATM equipment. A "skimmer" is mounted to the front of the normal ATM card slot that reads the ATM card number and transmits it to the criminals sitting in a nearby car.

At the same time, a wireless camera is disguised to look like a leaflet holder and is mounted in a position to view ATM PIN entries.

The thieves copy the cards and use the PIN numbers to withdraw thousands from many accounts in a very short time directly from the bank ATM.

Alexander The Great's Last Words

There is very instructive incident involving the life of Alexander, the great Greek king.

Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed. With death staring him in his face, Alexander realized how his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence.

He now longed to reach home to see his mother's face and bid her his last adieu. But, he had to accept the fact that his sinking health would not permit him to reach his distant homeland. So, the mighty conqueror lay prostrate and pale, helplessly waiting to breathe his last.

He called his generals and said, "I will depart from this world soon, I have three wishes, please carry out them out without fail." With tears flowing down their cheeks, the generals agreed to abide by their king's last wishes.

"My first desire is that", said Alexander, "My physicians alone must carry my coffin."

After a pause, he continued, "Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be strewn with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected in my treasury".

The king felt exhausted after saying this. He took a minute's rest and continued. "My third and last wish is that both my hands be kept dangling out of my coffin".

The people who had gathered there wondered at the king's strange wishes. But no one dared bring the question to their lips. Alexander's favorite general kissed his hand and pressed them to his heart. "Our beloved king, we assure you that your wishes will all be fulfilled. But tell us why do you make such strange wishes?"

At this Alexander took a deep breath and said: "I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learnt.

Lessons to learn from last 3 wishes of King Alexander

I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure any body. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let not people take life for granted.

The second wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell People that not even a fraction of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is a sheer waste of time to chase wealth.

And about my third wish of having my hands dangling out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came empty handed into this world and empty handed I go out of this world".

Alexander’s last words: “Bury my body, do not build any monument, keep my hands outside so that the world knows the person who won the world had nothing in his hands when dying“.

With these words, the king closed his eyes. Soon he let death conquer him and breathed his last.

World’s Fastest Limousine is Longest Ferrari

It was about 23 feet long roadster with 3.6 liter V8, 400bhp that is expected to hit the UK market at the European Limousine and Chauffeur Show. The formation and the production of this peerless limo is done by limo boss Dan Cowley; who is the blessed owner of the astounding ten-wheeled Terminator (Europe’s longest stretch Hummer).

The huge Ferrari limo is designed from a Ferrari 360 Modena chopped in half and prolonged by 9.5ft with a segment of carbon fiber that is hand-built. It can accommodate eight people and speeds with 0 to 60mph in less than six seconds with a top race of 170mph.

The inside of the Ferrari is no less than a five-star deluxe hotel. It features a 10-inch flat screen monitor that can broadcast images from cameras located on the exteriors. To make you feel at home, the Ferrari also comes packed with a six speaker surround sound system and DVD system fitted inside it.

Breaking the Guinness records of “The fastest Limousine and the Longest Ferrari,” this elite Ferrari is fabricated at an expenditure of £200,000.

World's Smallest Body Builder

At just 2 feet and 9 inch, Indian muscleman Aditya 'Romeo' Dev is the world's smallest bodybuilder.
Pint-sized Romeo is well-known in his hometown of Phagwara, India - for his ability to lift 1.5kg dumbbells - despite his overall 9kg body weight.
Every day, crowds flock to the local gym to the see the mini-muscleman in training.

Unlike many dwarfs, Romeo is well proportioned, with a head circumference of 15 inch and a chest measurement of 20 inch.

Romeo said: "I've been training as a bodybuilder for the last two years and by now I think I must be the strongest dwarf in the world.

"I have always been fit but since I started working out, I have become famous for my strength.

"My size has never stopped me. I train with dumbbells and do aerobics and dance. People are always pleased to see me. I have been invited on TV shows and dance on stage."

Howzat: Romeo bats away any doubts about his sporting prowess prompted by his size.

His trainer Ranjeet Pal spents hours helping his 19-year-old protege build his small muscles to perfection.

"When he first started, I insisted he did a month of basic exercises like aerobics, push-ups and basic gymnastics to prepare his body.

Possibly the strongest dwarf in the world: Romeo and his 1.5kg dumbbells.

"After that, I made lightweight dumbbells and taught him basic weight-lifting exercises to shape his biceps and triceps. His size and his weight were taken care of so that he never hurt himself."

Determined Romeo is hoping to have an entertainment career after performing in many local TV shows.

He said: "I earn good money through my dance and bodybuilding shows but being rich doesn't interest me.

"My dream is to travel a lot - I want to perform in London with my idol, Jazzy-B."

Whipped Ocean

Suddenly the shoreline north of Sydney were transformed into the Cappuccino Coast. Foam swallowed an entire beach and half the nearby buildings, including the local lifeguards' center, in a freak display of nature at Yamba in New South Wales.

One minute a group of teenage surfers were waiting to catch a wave, the next they were swallowed up in a giant bubble bath. The foam was so light that they could puff it out of their hands and watch it float away.

Boy in the bubble bath, Tom Woods, 12 years old, emerges from the clouds of foam after deciding that surfing was not an option.
It stretched for 30 miles out into the Pacific in a phenomenon not seen at the beach for more than three decades. Scientists explain that the foam is created by impurities in the ocean, such as salts, chemicals, dead plants, decomposed fish and excretions from seaweed. All are churned up together by powerful currents which cause the water to form bubbles. These bubbles stick to each other as they are carried below the surface by the current towards the shore. As a wave starts to form on the surface, the motion of the water causes the bubbles to swirl upwards and, massed together, they become foam.
The foam 'surfs' towards shore until the wave 'crashes', tossing the foam into the air.

The foam was so thick, it came all the way up to the surf club.
It's the same effect you get when you whip up a milk shake in a blender, the more powerful the swirl, the more foam you create on the surface and the lighter it becomes. In this case, storms off the New South Wales Coast and further north off Queensland had created a huge disturbance in the ocean, hitting a stretch of water where there was a particularly high amount of the substances which form into bubbles. As for 12-year-old beach goer Tom Woods, who has been surfing since he was two, riding a wave was out of the question. 'Me and my mates just spent the afternoon leaping about in that stuff,' he said.
'It was quite cool to touch and it was really weird. It was like clouds of air - you could hardly feel it.'

What is 'shark finning'?
It's a form of fishing intended to satisfy the Asian market for shark fin soup (Hong Kong accounts for 70% of this market) and Chinese medicine. Once hooked, the shark is roughly dragged onto the fishing boat, the dorsal, pectoral and tail fins are sliced off, and the rest of the body is thrown back into the sea. If the shark doesn't get tangled up and drown (sharks need to keep moving to allow water to pass over their gills so they can take oxygen from the water) it is butchered alive, and it normally takes hours or even days for the shark to die.

Shark fin soup
Often served at weddings and other formal banquets in Asia, shark fin soup is a delicacy and an indication of status. Shark fin is tasteless, all the flavour of the soup coming from the chicken or fish stock base. It may also be dangerous - mercury poisoning from industrial waste is common in sharks, and that mercury is passed on to people eating the fins. Mercury never leaves your body, it simply builds up, and at toxic levels causes insanity and death.

Chinese medicine:
Sharks are considered healthy creatures - many maladies that affect man don't affect sharks. It has been clinically proven that shark fins contain no medicinally beneficial compounds, and there is no evidence of anyone ever having been helped by consuming shark fin.

So what's the problem?
* Barbarous manner in which shark finning is done.
* At present, approximately 100 million sharks are being killed for this market each year.
* We have already lost 90% of the world's population of sharks.
* Sharks eat a lot of fish, maintaining the balance of fish populations. Fewer sharks means more fish. More fish means creatures lower down the food chain are consumed in much larger numbers. Amongst these creatures are oxygen producing plankton and algae: tiny lifeforms that consume carbon dioxide and produce oxygen as a byproduct. Plankton produces 70% of world oxygen.

What can We do?
* To start with, don't eat shark fin soup, and don't eat in any restaurant that sells it. If possible, let them know why you choose not to eat there.
* Don't take any so-called medicine that contains shark fin. It has no medical benefit, and probably contains toxic mercury.
* Watch the movie "Sharkwater" by Rob Stewart. It shows clearly how this industry works and how brutal it is. it also shows you the outstanding beauty of sharks and dispels the myths about the dangers of sharks. Essential viewing.
* Learn all you can about sharks and shark finning, it's effects on the environment and educate your friends.

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins

After years of telling people chemotherapy is the only way to try and eliminate cancer, Johns Hopkinsis finally starting to tell you there is an alternative way.

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

What cancer cells feed on:
a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk, cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells.

To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water--best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic build-up.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-essence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor.

Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

Kimberley Big Hole - South Africa

It's apparently the largest ever hand-dug excavation in the world,
this 1,097 meter deep mine yielded over 3 tons of diamonds before being closed in 1914.

The amount of earth removed by workers is estimated to total 22.5 million tons.

Glory Hole - Monticello Dam

A glory hole is used when a dam is at full capacity
and water needs to be drained from the reservoir.

This is the glory hole belonging to Monticello Dam in California
and it's the largest in the world,
its size enabling it to consume 14,400 cubic feet of water every second.

The hole can be seen at the left of the photo above (near the road).
If you were to jump in for some reason,
your slightly damp body would shoot out near the bottom of the dam
(see below).

Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah

This is supposedly the largest man-made (not hand dug) excavation on earth. Extraction began in 1863 and still continues today,
the pit increasing in size constantly.
In its current state, the hole is 3/4 mile deep and 2.5 miles wide.

Great Blue Hole, Belize

Situated 60 miles off the mainland of Belize is this incredible geographical phenomenon known as a blue hole.
There are numerous blue holes around the world
but none as stunning as this one.

At surface level, the near perfectly circular hole is 1/4 mile wide,
the depth in the middle reaching 145 metres.
Obviously the hole is a huge hit with divers.

Mirny Diamond Mine, Serbia

I'm pretty sure most people have seen this one.
It's an absolute beast and holds the title of largest open diamond mine in the world. At 525 meters deep with a top diameter of 1,200 meters,
there's even a no-fly zone above the hole due to a few helicopters being sucked in.

Diavik Mine, Canada

This incredible mine can be found 300km,
northeast of Yellow Knife in Canada.

The mine is so huge and the area so remote that it even has its own airport with a runway large enough to accommodate a Boeing 737.
It also looks equally as cool when the surrounding water is frozen. 7.

Sinkhole, Guatemala

A sinkhole is caused when water (usually rainwater or sewage) is soaked up by the earth on a large scale, resulting in the ground collapsing.

These photos are of a sinkhole which occurred in Guatemala. The hole swallowed a dozen homes and killed at least 3 people.

Officials blamed the monster of a hole on a ruptured sewage pipe.

麗蓉是個全職的家庭主婦，一心照顧三個成長中的孩子；孩子也很爭氣，成績都相當優秀，尤其就讀國三的大女兒，一路走來，幾乎都是全班第一。但這樣的光彩，最近蒙上了一層令麗蓉十分憂心的陰影。一個下午，是該到補習班接大女兒回家的時間，麗蓉因臨時有事而耽擱了近二十分鐘，只見女兒臭著一張臉，沒好氣地對媽媽說：「我還以為妳發生車禍呢！」這句刻薄的話，深深刺傷了麗蓉的心。第一次面對這樣的問題，麗蓉不知如何處理，到處詢問好友：「如果是你，會怎麼做？」而她又如何面對女兒呢？她選擇冷戰，一個星期不和女兒說話。

每個月有一個星期的早上，我會到孩子已畢業的小學當導護媽媽，幫忙維持校門口的行車秩序；也藉這段時間，近距離感受親子間的互動情形。我發現，現在已經很少有孩子會自行走路上學了，大都由父母或爺爺奶奶載送，即使離家只有五分鐘路程，父母也捨不得讓孩子走路。有些孩子到校門口，下車後便直挺挺站著，由父母為他取下安全帽、口罩或外套，再把書包掛到孩子身上，孩子幾乎不必動手，這一貫作業便由父母全自動完成。有一次，一個三年級的男生下車後，發現便當盒沒帶，竟大聲地對媽媽吼著：「每次都是妳沒準備好，害我忘了帶！」媽媽只笑笑地對他說：「你先進教室，我回家幫你拿。」孩子一轉身便走進教室。一直相信「人之初，性本善」，但我們到底帶給孩子怎樣的教育，竟將他們善良、純真的本性磨滅殆盡？

我們一味地溺愛孩子，來滿足自己身為父母的需求，以為這樣對孩子就是好的；當有一天，孩子投入社會競爭的漩渦，將何以立足呢？為什麼現代年輕人的抗壓性如此薄弱？不是父母太多盲目的愛造成的嗎？只一味要求孩子成績出類拔萃，全不管人格的養成，難怪現代父母老是怨嘆「養兒難以防老」了。

有位高三的孩子，父母因病雙亡，只和讀大學的姊姊相依為命。平常姊弟倆都住校，每逢假日回到家，就得面對一屋子的孤寂。他告訴我：「有時想念父母，就會跑進他們生前的房間，回憶父母在世時的身影，感受爸媽留下的愛。」他沉痛地說：「有時看到同學對父母親那種不耐煩的態度，動不動就大小聲的和父母親說話，就替他們覺得難過。人為什麼總要等到失去了，才會珍惜曾經擁有的呢？」

父母若真愛孩子，應該給他一個可以面對未來人生大風大浪考驗的生命態度；握在手中的線放得愈長，孩子遨遊天際的空間就會愈大，不是嗎？

Worlds Largest Swimming Pool

According to the Guinness World Records, the largest swimming pool in the world is San Alfonso del Mar Seawater pool in Algarrobo, Chile. It is 3,323 ft long, covers 20 acres, had a 115 ft deep end
and holds 66 million gallons of water. It was completed in December 2006.

But if you fancy splashing out on one of your own - and you have the space to accommodate it - then beware: This one took five years to build, cost nearly $1billion and the annual maintenance bill will be $2million.

The man-made saltwater lagoon has been attracting huge crowds to the San Alfonso del Mar resort at Algarrobo, on Chile's southern coast, since it opened last month.

Its turquoise waters are so crystal clear that you can see the bottom even in the deep end.

Chile 's monster pool uses a computer-controlled suction and filtration system to keep fresh seawater in permanent circulation, drawing it in from the ocean at one end and pumping it out at the other.

The sun warms the water to 26c, nine degrees warmer than the adjoining sea.

Chilean biochemist Fernando Fischmann, whose Crystal Lagoons Corporation designed the pool, said advanced engineering meant his company could build 'an impressive artificial paradise' even in inhospitable areas. 'As long as we have access to unlimited seawater, we can make it work, and it causes no damage to the ocean.'
